Anti-aging peptides: How do they really work on your wrinkles?

Dr. Anaïs Bambili

Peptides have been a staple of anti-aging skincare for the past decade. But there’s a world of difference between formulas that contain them in homeopathic concentrations and those that have been clinically validated. As a doctor and dermatologist who spent four years developing a peptide cream, here’s what I’ve learned.

What exactly is a peptide?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. In cosmetics, peptides act as signaling molecules: when applied to the skin, they send specific instructions to skin cells.

Their primary mechanism is based on the fact that certain peptides mimic fragments of degraded collagen. This mimicry signals to fibroblasts—the cells responsible for collagen production—that it is time to synthesize more collagen. It is therefore not a matter of supplying the skin with external collagen, but rather of stimulating its natural production mechanisms through a form of cellular communication.

Not all peptides are created equal

There are now hundreds of different peptides, with varying levels of scientific documentation. Caprooyl Tetrapeptide-3—the one we selected for Ritual 03 —has been extensively studied for its ability to reduce wrinkle depth.

Clinical studies have shown measurable results after 4 to 8 weeks of regular use, particularly in terms of improved skin firmness and texture.

Peptides vs. Retinol: Which One Should You Choose?

Peptides and retinol work differently and address different needs. Retinol is known for its effectiveness, but it can be irritating, often requires a period of adjustment, and is not recommended during pregnancy.

Peptides, on the other hand, work through cellular signaling. They are generally well tolerated, even by sensitive skin, and can be used from day one without any special adjustment period. They are also suitable for pregnant women.

For people between the ages of 30 and 45 who want to start an anti-aging regimen, peptides are often an excellent first step.

The “21% reduction in wrinkle depth” claimed by VIBRE Paris’s Plumping Cream: where does that figure come from?

This result is based on our clinical trial protocol, which uses a technique called skin profilometry to analyze the actual three-dimensional topography of the skin.

After 8 weeks of daily use, the results showed an improvement in skin elasticity in 100% of participants, as well as an average 21% reduction in wrinkle depth.

How long does it take to see results?

Peptides do not produce dramatic, immediate results. The first visible changes usually appear after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use, while optimal results are seen after 8 to 12 weeks.

This is a long-term investment, with gradual results designed to bring about lasting improvements in the skin’s structure and quality.
